Preparing Your Body for Pregnancy – Dr. Sweet
My husband wanted babies yesterday (so do I), but we wanted to wait until I was done with chiropractic school. So, here we are. I’m going to share with you the things I have done and am currently doing to prepare myself for the best pregnancy possible.
The first thing I addressed was my birth control. About one year ago I had my Nexplanon removed (a hormonal birth control stick that was placed just under the skin on the inside of my arm). I then detoxed for a month using the Standard Process Purification Cleanse. If you want to learn more, feel free to contact me. Essentially, along with the supplements I cleaned up my diet by eliminating processed foods, sugar, and alcohol.
Unfortunately, I am like most women my age and have been on hormonal birth control for a good portion of my life. What has that done to my natural hormone production and egg supply? I don’t really know. My guess is nothing good! I never got pregnant, so it served its purpose, but hindsight is always 20:20. I would have rather learned how to track my cycle and know the signs of ovulation and when to avoid having sex along with just using a barrier method! Hormonal birth control has not been around forever, and the long-term effects are not well known. Suppressing your body from ovulating is going to take some toll on your body in the long run and we may not see these effects until we begin trying to conceive. Live and learn – now I get to educate others!
I continue to eat a low carbohydrate, moderate protein (grass-fed/hormone free as much as possible), and high fat diet (the good fats: coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, etc.). Eliminate almost all added sugar and processed foods. Pretty much eat things that actually come from the earth and not pre-packaged ‘foods’. Eat lots of vegetables (almost all organic) and some fruit. Additionally, cut down on alcohol and caffeine. It’s not always easy and breaking the sugar addiction is hard, but it’s so detrimental to our health. I love food, so I definitely struggle with my eating at times. It’s almost hard not to be a food addict considering the bioengineering that goes into most processed food which literally makes us addicted to it. They are manufacturing the food to play on our taste buds. It’s creepy and should be illegal, it is not helping with the obesity crisis in our country! Also, the elephant in the room that is forgotten frequently. How is your partner’s health? Are they eating like garbage? It is not only up to the woman to prepare her body, it takes two to tango!
Next, was finding good quality supplements:
- Prenatal vitamin– One with FOLATE, not the synthetic folic acid which is being linked to methylation issues. I use the Basic Prenatal by Thorne
- Omega Fatty Acids– I take one by Standard Process
- Vitamin D – liquid, sunshine is best but unfortunately most of us don’t have access to that year round
- Probiotic– high in quantity and diversity, change this one up frequently
